This Sunday I'm going to attempt to hit 3 different gigs in one night. This isn't part of some multi-venue festival, each is run by a different promoter and the venues are not walking distance from each other. Is it possible? Is it a fool's errand? Is it more stress than it is worth? Has anyone else ever tried this?

Going to small gigs in London means you see some pretty bizarre line-ups. I've got nothing against a support act I don't enjoy, but some of them are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Two gigs stand out in my memory. Frightened Rabbit at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen featured the "wonky pop" of Dan Black as opener. I absolutely could not stand him and his band, but it was so bad for me that I became kind of hypnotised (or perhaps morbidly fascinated), and remained for his entire, gruelling set.

I went to see The dø at Barfly, and I think it was a show promoted by XFM (the radio station). The two supports were equally matched in their lack of suitability for an audience there to see French/Finnish indie rock. Terry Lynn was Jamaican dance-hall influenced techno-pop, and Speech Debelle (who had just won the Mercury Prize) followed with South London hip hop. It just didn't work, and both made it worse by yelling at the audience in an attempt to get us excited and fired up (spoilers: it didn't work). Sad times.

At least in both my cases the headline set was awesome. Gimme your worst.

I'm saying that 2012 has been a fantastic year for new music.

Through the wonders of a splendid website called Albums Of The Year I can reveal my...

Best 50 Albums of 2012

For those that can't be bothered to click the link here's my top ten....

1. Dexys - One Day I'm Going To Soar

I’m a longtime Dexys admirer. All four albums are firm favourites. The debut is one of the most vital and powerful albums ever; the Celtic-soul of the second is wonderful; ‘Don’t Stand Me Down’ is full of beauty and strength; and - after a wait of almost thirty years -‘One Day I’m Going To Soar’ is my favourite album of 2012, and fits right in with the consistent quality of the Dexys’ back catalogue. Kevin Rowland is one of the most honest and brave performers out there. He puts it all out in the open - emotions, mistakes, and his deepest thoughts and insecurities. I sometimes marvel that someone like Kevin managed to achieve such mass appeal. Great to have him back - even better that he's produced such an amazing album to mark Dexys' return.

2. Bill Fay - Life Is People

3. Beach House - Bloom

4. Public Image Ltd. This is PiL

5. The North Sea Scrolls - The North Sea Scrolls

6. Patti Smith - Banga

7. Moon Duo - Circles

8. Grizzly Bear - Shields

9. Jimmy Cliff - Rebirth

10. Alt-J - An Awesome Wave

I also recently created the first (of two) mixes of some of my favourite tunes from 2012.

The first is the uptempo mix. There will be a downtempo mix to follow.

In amongst the great music are a few of the news stories that happened during 2012 to enrich the listening experience. There are less samples than usual to try and cram in more great music. There were so many more tunes I'd like to have included. I kept it under the length of a single CD (just). So, I present for your listening pleasure The World Of Joy Best Tracks of 2012 (Uptempo)

What about you?

Best tracks?

Best albums?

To what extent has it been a good year for music?

I saw The Lumineers at Koko last night. Throughout their show, the band politely asked everyone to put their phones away. "Having your phone out doesn't necessarily make you a bad person, but it definitely doesn't make you a good one." Ha.

I'd genuinely forgotten what live music was like without a sea of iPhones between you and the band. Best show I've been to in ages. Maybe The Lumineers were just enforcing their dress-and-act-like-you're-from-the-lower-decks-of-the-titanic policy, but who cares. It was great.
